Summer is nearly here, and so we asked you where you’d most like to drive to in Canada. Here’re your top responses.
To the Maritimes
To that little motel (with the dogs in tow)
Along the lakeshore
Across beautiful British Columbia
The long westbound route
The scenic (ocean) route
Through the Rockies
“If I had lots of time to travel I think I would like to go visit Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and New Brunswick.” –Terry J.
There are some beautiful, scenic roads on Canada’s East Coast, and plenty of friendly people, too. If you’ve never been, you won’t regret going. (Don’t forget to check out P.E.I.!)
“Would like to drive from here down to PEI and Nfld!!” – Susan G.
Susan and Jim H. also picked up on the Maritimes vibe. As Jim put it, “Gotta be Nova Scotia for sure.”
“Realistically, Williams Lake! There is the best little motel there. And they take dogs!” –Linda M.
A road trip is sometimes about the drive, sometimes about the destination, and sometimes about both. Getting to Williams Lake is going to require driving through beautiful B.C. no matter where you’re coming from, so it’s an all-around win.
“Wish I had a car. I’d probably drive to Peterborough (from Hamilton).” –Kassandra H.
When you live somewhere as big as Ontario, you don’t have to leave the province for a few-hours’-drive road trip. Following the shore on Lake Ontario from Hamilton to Peterborough would be one of our picks, too, though we can also see the fun in taking some of the back roads inland.
“Prince George B.C. Also Chilliwack and Cranbrook with Creston thrown in for good measure.” –Terry L.
Barbara B. also called out the “Crowsnest Highway 3 thru South Central B.C.”—and there’s a good reason this B.C.-Alberta roadway, built in 1932, is so popular. The highway crosses up, over and across several beautiful mountain passes and through the Okanagan and Fraser Valley.
“Hope to go to Ottawa Toronto and Calgary from Montreal” –Karen H.
Montreal-to-Calgary would take some 40 hours, plus at least another five to detour by Toronto and the capital. But it’s also one of the most interesting drives, right through the heart of the country.
“A road trip during the summer along Hwy 19A from Nanaimo, B.C. to Campbell River, B.C. is the MOST BEAUTIFUL SCENIC OCEAN DRIVE EVER!!! Hwy 19A is also called the ‘Scenic Ocean’ route.” –Deana Angela C.
We’re not going to argue with Deana. This drive along the eastern shore of Vancouver Island has a reputation for being gorgeous—shame is it’s only a two-hour jaunt!
“Did from Toronto to PEI a few years ago. Would love to go the other way to Vancouver and back. The Rockies look amazing” –Jay R.
Mountain driving requires a certain skill set, so if you want to put your driving to the test, the Rockies are among the best (and best-looking) places to do it. You’d better be well-prepared for that trek!
“Across Canada. From Vancouver Island to NFld!!!” –Irene F.
There’s no better way to experience Canada than by driving across the entire thing. It’s not the easiest road trip by any means – you should set aside at least a week to do it, preferably longer – but it’s not impossible either. Have you pulled off a coast-to-coast drive yourself? Tell us about it in the comments!
