In an auto industry that’s moving ever closer to being dominated by self-driving electric cars you’ll only borrow when you need one, it’s nice to see small car manufacturers ignore those trends and build, well, whatever they want to.

The latest to take that idea to heart is California’s Rezvani Motors, which just revealed its newest model: a wildly styled off-roader with a Dodge HEMI V8 it aptly calls the Tank.

Our initial impression is of a Toyota FJ Cruiser done up for duty defending against the zombie apocalypse, and it turns out that’s not far off what Rezvani had in mind: among the Tank’s optional features are thermal- and night-vision systems and ballistic protection that includes bulletproof glass, military-grade run-flat tires, and kevlar armour in the body panels and shields protecting the fuel tank, radiator, and floorpan.

The Tank is a body-on-frame XUV (Xtreme Utility Vehicle) with standard on-demand 4WD and boasting 500 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque from a 6.4-litre HEMI V8 hooked to an automatic transmission.

Unsurprisingly, given the level of performance on offer here, Rezvani is eager to let you make your Tank as invincible as possible with options like a six-inch suspension lift that comes with 37×12.5-inch tires, locking axles, and remote-reservoir shocks. An extreme off-road package goes even further with 13.5-inch-wide tires, tougher axles, air lockers, upgraded brakes and driveshafts, and internal bypass shocks.

But Rezvani wants you to be comfortable while scaling sheer rock faces, so the Tank’s options include a hand-stitched leather interior with a suede headliner, plus a 7.9-inch infotainment system and a heads-up display. A convenience package adds automatic foldaway side steps, which we think would be a wise addition if you go for the lifted suspension.

Hopefully you don’t expect such an over-the-top truck to come cheap: Rezvani says Tank pricing starts at $178,500. The company is taking orders now and will deliver the first examples later this year.
