A new software update means Tesla’s on-board nav system will now alert drivers to the busy-ness of nearby charging stations, not just their location, in a bid to reduce congestion and wait times.
Tesla’s mapping system previously showed icons detailing the whereabouts of its myriad charging stations, but whether or not any of the chargers were available for use remained a mystery until drivers arrived on-site.
With this latest update, drivers can now click on the map’s charger station icons, revealing a graphic that shows current charger availability.
Overcrowding at several charging stations has pressed Tesla to institute new rules, charges and penalties in an effort to quell demand. Included among the measures are penalties for over-staying beyond a car’s required charge time and the discontinuation of free charging on Tesla’s “Supercharger” network for new Tesla buyers starting 2017.
