A 22 year-old car thief made off with what many would consider the crown-jewel of sports cars – the Porsche 918 Spyder – and took it on a six-hour joy ride before the long arm of the law caught up with him.
The exotic Porsche supercar was stolen directly from a dealership showroom in Salt Lake City, Utah after the suspected scheming thief, Francisco Gonzalez-Velasquez, smashed his way into the dealership and stole the keys, reports KUTV News.
The brazen joy ride unfolded midday on a lazy Sunday afternoon, eliciting flashbacks to the valet joy ride from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.
After hunting the car down, police found the vehicle only a few blocks from the dealership it was stolen from. Car enthusiast thieves with more imagination might’ve headed for the border, shortly after shaving off every serial number in sight; but apparently this young man had his fill after his half-day exploit behind the wheel of Porsche’s flagship sports car.
We strongly suspect the dealership involved will be enacting a more secure key storage policy after losing what was undoubtedly their most valuable car.
On a positive note, the car was returned to the dealership undamaged, less some tire and brake wear.
