The leader of the Catholic church, Pope Francis, turned down a Tesla Model S in favour of a Nissan LEAF EV when being offered a free example of either, reports Electrek.

Jochen Wermuth, a Berlin-based asset manager, is an environmental activist who has focused his efforts on convincing the Vatican to invest in sustainable energy projects. As part of his effort to get the church to alter its investment strategy, Wermuth decided to gift the Pope a new EV of his choosing.

The LEAF will be added to the Vatican’s fleet of vehicles for a period of one year; it’s unlikely the Pope will ever ride in it, but it’s possible it may be driven by Vatican staff.
