Police in Nuoro, Italy investigating a gun and drug trafficking ring say they dug up a gang’s plan to steal Enzo Ferrari’s body in order to demand a ransom from his family.
Numerous news reports revealed the snuffed heist, which to us sounds like a plot stolen straight from Hollywood.
Italian cops rounded up approximately 30(!) suspects they say were complicit in drawing up an elaborate plan involving three vehicles, breaking into Ferrari’s above-ground tomb in the San Cataldo cemetery in Modena, and transporting the Formula One pioneer’s remains to the Apennine Mountains, where the criminals would await their ransom.
The bad guys in this case belonged to an illicit Sardinian group called Anonima Sequestri, which apparently has a rich history of kidnapping living people and demanding ransom; it’s not clear whether this was their first attempt at spiriting away someone whose spirit has already shuffled off this mortal coil.
The investigation that foiled the crime was no small operation, reportedly involving 300(!!) law enforcement officers, including police and paratroopers.
