General overview

For 2012, the Civic model has been completely redesigned. On the outside, the Civic’s styling is more swooping and curvy, along with a new front and rear-end.

Inside, Honda continues with a digital dashboard layout like the previous model’s, albeit a bit bigger – trim materials are different as well, and the handbrake lever is now placed closer to the centre console, instead of near the driver’s legroom.

The Civic also gained four-wheel-disc brakes in front and rear as standard equipment, unlike the previous base model’s disc-drum configuration. Additional standard tech includes auto-off headlights, a rear window defroster, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel and power windows.

A higher-trim LX model gains additional features such as body-color door handles, power mirrors and door locks, keyless entry, air-conditioning, cruise control, floor mats, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls and a four-speaker sound system with a CD player and auxiliary/USB audio inputs.

Mechanically however, the 2012 Civic remains unchanged. A 140-horsepower 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine powers majority of the lineup, coupled with either five-speed manual or automatic transmissions – the SI model still gets a 2.4-litre, 200-horsepower inline-four-cylinder engine and six-speed manual gearbox.

In Hybrid form, the Civic gains a 1.5-litre engine, which works in conjunction to an electric motor and a continuously-variable-transmission (CVT).

*Despite the big update, the 2012 model year Civic gathered mixed reviews. While many enjoyed the new model, the car was equally criticized for its interior noise and poor-quality materials as well as fit-and-finish. In 2013, the Civic was completely redesigned.
